There are millions who call themselves a student, and thousands who call themselves radio broadcasters. Few, however, can call themselves both at the same time.
Meet Ryan MacGregor: a COMM major with a double emphasis in mass media and journalism. He’s also the voice of Green Bay Phoenix volleyball and an ESPN contributor.
As an ESPN3 commentator, MacGregor provides play-by-play during volleyball matches. After play, he provides a recap and game statistics to an ardent audience. The difficult part of his job is being accurate – and timely – at all the matches.
After taking a radio broadcasting class, MacGregor said, “I felt much better equipped for the job. In class, I was put behind a microphone for different projects and assignments which eventually, made me comfortable talking live on air.”
MacGregor has been with Green Bay Phoenix Athletics for more than two years – first with the marketing and promotions team for Kress Events Center. The broadcasting position, more or less, fell into Ryan’s lap: A connection at the Kress brought the position to his attention.
“It has always been a passion of mine, and I’m intrigued by everything that goes on behind the scenes,” he said. “It sounds cliché, but I’ve always wanted to be on television.”
Thanks to both the COMM program and his experience at UWGB, Ryan MacGregor graduated last month – fully prepared to enter the broadcast field. Stay tuned to see how the ‘GB COMM program preps students for the workplace.
The Producers include: Micah Kulpinski, Kaylie Noll, Ryan MacGregor and Kia Murray.
