Slants His Way

Slants’ Frontman Simon Tam filed his original lawsuit after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office stopped his band from registering its own name.

SIMON TAM – Founder of the Asian American rock band The Slants – will speak @UWGB/APR 28 about his incredible, eight-year journey – a journey that ended with a favorable decision from the U.S. Supreme Court.

In Matal v Tam, the Supreme Court said Simon had every right to call his band whatever disparaging name he wanted. The ruling has broad impact on how the First Amendment is applied in other trademark cases – across the land. Simon fought the Law, and won.

His is Quite a Story:  UWGB students and faculty can get an inside look – from The Insider himself – into the legal strategy and all the complex, Constitutional and Intellectual Property Law implications of his Slants.

There are complex Communication issues involved with this case as well. It might be a fun, educational way for a COMM Major to spend a couple hours on a lazy, Sunday afternoon April 28?  The Facebook event page is HERE:

This MESA event is made possible with support from Student Life, Good Times Programming and Diversity Task Force.
